Joe Carstairs
Software Developer
I didn't have a formal education in software before I joined the Scott Logic graduate programme.
Having studied a degree in Philosophy and Mathematics, much more on the humanities side, I had only coded as a hobby.
I applied for dozens of jobs post-graduation and found that recruitment was generally quite a gruelling experience. The Scott Logic graduate programme interview process, however, was very social, interactive, and humane. I left the interview thinking, "Even if I don't get this job, I feel like I've been treated like a human being".
In the first weeks at Scott Logic, there were many social events and opportunities to build strong relationships with peers and people across the business.
Three months into the graduate programme, I started on a project with my peers which was building a software product from scratch. Knowing that I had the ability to create a software product, I came away from that really encouraged about my own skills.
Alongside our technical capabilities, we've been able to develop our consultancy abilities through active listening workshops and monthly presentation skills , which I've been encouraged to help organise. Developers in more senior positions are also really keen to pass down their knowledge to others, which is proving to be so valuable.
Much of what I have learned about software development has been on the job, enabled by the culture at Scott Logic of constant learning.
